​How to Apply Mattify's
Powder for Oily Skin 

STEP 1: Cleanse face and apply any complimentary products such as acne treatments or moisturizers.
After these products have dried, use a fluffy powder brush or puff to apply Mattify Powder on your entire face. Don't forget your eye lids! 

STEP 2: Apply your foundation as usual. Mattify Powder can be used underneath any type of makeup, including liquid, mineral, airbrush, or pressed foundations. 

STEP 3: After all makeup (except mascara) has been applied, add another dusting of Mattify Powder, to set your makeup. For more concentrated application on extra oily areas, use a powder puff to blot the powder onto skin until it disappears. 

Your oil-free finish should last a minimum of 3 hours and maximum of 8 hours, depending on the amount of oil your skin secretes. This powder does not contain shiny ingredients such as mica and pearl powder, typically found in face powders.

TOUCHUPS: Since this powder is colorless, touch-ups can be done over your makeup throughout the day without looking cakey or heavy. (For the best finish, we recommend using an oil blotting sheet before re-powdering.)

Answers to commonly asked questions about our Mattify Powder 

Q. How is Mattify Powder different from other makeup on the market? 

A. Many makeup products include ingredients that can be harmful to acne prone skin, and can cause oily skin to look even shinier.  Mattify Transparent Powder (and also our Tinted Powder Foundation) do NOT contain pearl powder, bismuth oxychloride, dimethicone (silicone), crosspolymers, talc, waxes, or mica.

Why are these omitted ingredients so bad for oily skin?
Mica and pearl powder add sheen to your over-all complexion, giving you the look of excess oil.  The particles can also clog and stretch pores, triggering inflammation and breakouts. 

Bismuth Oxychloride can cause skin to turn red and feel itchy. It also is a fairly heavy ingredient, causing makeup to look and feel too thick. Talc causes dead skin cells to stick together, which can form a layer of old skin over pores. When pores become unable to obtain oxygen, bacteria flourishes and breakouts ensue. 

Dimethicone, crosspolymers and waxes (unfortunately found in the majority of cosmetics) may be the most harmful ingredients of all. These easily absorb into pores like glue, trapping dirt and oil beneath. This process triggers blackheads and breakouts, and since the ingredients are water-resistant, they aren't easily washed away when you scrub your face. To purge these toxins, excessive amounts of exfoliation, plus the use of clarifying face masks are required, in order to re-oxygenate pores.  Over time, this routine can severely irritate skin, and disrupt your natural skin barrier balance. It's fine to use makeup with these ingredients occasionally, but you will quickly find that daily use triggers breakouts, excess oil production, and stretched, clogged pores. 

So how are Mattify Products different? The ingredients in Mattify Powder are extremely gentle and finely milled, to prevent pore expansion.  Rather than settling into pores, Mattify Powder is designed to sit on the surface while soaking up oil. When you wash your face at the end of the day, dirt, oil and foundation are whisked away, leaving skin clean, healthy and refreshed - with no product left behind inside pores.  In addition, Mattify Skincare Treatments and Moisturizer for Oily Skin do not contain dimethicone or crosspolymers. 

Customers frequently ask why we do not have a pressed-powder version of our Mattify Transparent and Tinted Powders. The answer? In order to press powder, some form of wax, dimethicone, or alcohol is required. Since these ingredients are so harmful to oily skin types, we have not yet created a pressed formula... but we're we're working on alternative methods! 

Q. Will Mattify Powder turn my skin ashy grey or ghostly white in pictures?

A. ​No! Mattify Powder is completely translucent, allowing your natural skin color to show through. The more you buff it into your skin, the more translucent it becomes.  For this reason, its even a suitable product for men with oily skin, as it forms an invisible line of defense against oil.

If your skin tone is dark tan or ebony black, simply rotate the powder brush in circles on every section of your face to blend completely during application.  Mattify Powder can be reapplied several times throughout the day, without looking heavy. 
The powder is even invisible if spilled onto dark clothing. If this occurs, just dust away using fast back and forth motions.

Mattify Powder does contain 4% Titanium Dioxide (one of the ingredients responsible for a whitish cast in photos). However, the concentration is so low in our formula, it does not cause flash-back. Mattify Powder keeps skin looking fresh & matte during photo shoots under hot studio lights. 

Q. Exactly how does Mattify Transparent Powder work to control oil production?

A. The Kaolin Clay in Mattify Transparent Powder soaks up 3x its weight in oil. The combination of other ingredients absorb an additional 2x - 4x their weight in oil.  When the powder is applied before & after foundation, it absorbs oil continuously throughout the day. Mattify Powder essentially cleanses your face all day long, as excess oil is absorbed into the powder, rather than remaining on skin to clog pores.

Q. Why is my face still oily, even after using Mattify Transparent Powder?

​A. The ingredients in Mattify Transparent Powder are meant to seek and absorb any form of oil.  If you are using a moisturizer or foundation that is very emollient, or contains any form of oil, the Mattify Powder may be soaking up oil from your product, rather than the oil from your skin.

To troubleshoot, try switching to an oil-free moisturizer and/or foundation, and remember to use Mattify Powder both before and after foundation. Also, if you use moisturizer or sunscreen, allow it to dry for 10 minutes before applying your finishing layer of Mattify Powder.

Q. Can Mattify Transparent Powder be used on dry skin types?

​A.  Yes, in most cases. Many people with dry skin also have oily patches around their T-Zone. In that case, we suggest spot-applying Mattify Powder only to oily areas. If your skin is overall more dry than oily, but you would still like to enjoy the poreless, high-definition finish of Mattify Powder, apply it only after foundation (rather than both before & after). 

Mattify Powder is NOT recommended for use on skin that has flaky patches, as it tends to cling to & accentuate dry areas. 

Q. Will the silica spheres in Mattify! Transparent Powder clog my pores? 

​A.  Absolutely not!  
You may have heard that a common ingredient used in makeup and primers (Dimethicone / Silicone) can clog pores and cause acne breakouts. While this is very true, Mattify Cosmetics does NOT use Silicone in any of our products! Instead, we use powder silica spheres in our powder formulas. 

Silica Spheres and Silicone are commonly confused with each other. 
The two are not interchangeable!

Silicone is a popular ingredient in many foundations, moisturizers and gel primers. This man made plastic-like substance actually smothers pores and prevents oxygen from circulating.  Acne bacteria thrives in an environment deprived of oxygen - so you can see why the use of silicone based products is not advised for breakout prone skin. Also, silicone is not water soluble, so it can remain inside pores even after cleansing. 

Silica Spheres are a naturally occurring component of sand, and are very effective at absorbing skin oil.  Silica Spheres seamlessly glide over the skin, without sinking into pores to plug them. Skin is free to “breathe”, and the bacteria that cause acne are killed when exposed to oxygen. Using Mattify Transparent Powder as your primer (rather than sticky silicone-based gel products) actually improves oxygen flow to the pores, thereby decreasing breakouts.
