Q: How do I get my makeup to last all day?

I have oily skin, so ALL types of makeup looks blotchy or faded within hours. I need it to last longer!

Say goodbye to makeup meltdowns! 💋 We're sharing our favorite long-wearing makeup products and expert tips to help your glam survive oily skin, sweat, water, and whatever else the day throws your way. Get ready for makeup that lasts from morning coffee, to late-night plans, to outdoor adventures in humid weather.

    EYE LINER

One of the first concerns people have when looking for long lasting makeup is finding eyeliner that won’t run. Racoons are adorable animals, but we as humans would prefer not to look like one!

There are a few types that stay put for hours – let’s review the top indestructible liners!  NOTE: All of these eye liners function best when applied to bare, clean skin. Directly along your lash line, do not apply moisturizer or concealer before any type of gel, pen, or liquid eyeliner. Moisturizers and concealers often slip off the skin if it gets oily or damp, which means your liner will go with it. THE EXCEPTION?  If you are using powder eye shadow as a liner, it can be helpful to apply a lid primer to help it stick.

#1 Wet ‘n Wild Breakup Proof Waterproof Eye Liner Pen

Who would’ve thought a drugstore brand liner would outlast fancy high-end liners that cost several times more? This Mega Last Breakup-Proof Liquid Pen Liner from Wet n’Wild is one of the best we’ve found. It comes at an amazing price point of $5.

    Image description

This is recommended for those with hooded eyes, as it dries almost upon contact. (It’s notoriously difficult to apply liner to hooded eyes without transferring color to the upper lids.) Don’t expect blending with this one; where you apply it, it stays until you use remover to take it off.

It makes a clean matte wing, and allows you to get right up to the lashline. In addition, it’s nearly indestructible on the waterline! We’ve tested the famous Wonderskin Liner for this purpose, but if you have watery eyes or excessively oily skin, Wonderskin still smudges and rubs off. We like the fact that it comes in a beautiful variety of colors, and it has longevity on lids; but this Wet n’ Wild pen out-performs it on the waterline.

    Image description

While some reviewers say the pen itself dries out within a few weeks, others say it stays fluid for months. Here are some tips to help:  1) Store it flat. Don’t store it upright, with the inked tip pointing upward. It will drain the ink down into the base of the pen faster. 2) If it does feel dry, shake it with the tip pointing down 6-10 times, and this will force the ink back down into the tip.

The banner ad says has up to 16 hour wear. Well, I swear I have the oiliest skin in the world, and this lasts 24+ hours for me. Highly recommend!

#2  Wet n’Wild H20 Proof Liquid Eye Liner

If you’re really opposed to chancing the longevity of the liner pen, try their H20 Proof Liquid Liner. This comes with a precision point applicator that allows for a defined slightly glossy wing. It lasts almost as long, around 16-20+ hours. The main difference is that this H20 Proof liner is too liquidous to work for the water line.

    Image description

It’s my preferred choice for daily wear, and even some outdoor activities. The tiny bottle lasts for months, and this one does not dry out. I had one inside of a travel case that I forgot about for 2 years, and it was still like new.

The longevity is impressive, and it creates a vivid thick wing. Just be sure to allow it to dry 3-4 minutes before applying anything else over the top (like setting powder or spray). Once it does dry though, it doesn’t budge. However, if you have very hooded lids, you might find it tough to apply and are probably better off with the liner pen.

#3  Waterproof Eye Liner Runner Up: Wonderskin Eyeliner 1440

As we talked about earlier, this liner comes in an amazing variety of colors, and lasts 12+ hours on lids.

    Image description

Some say it’s fantastic for lids, but not for the waterline. While it does glide on buttery smooth, and lasts 2-4 hours, it does not have all-day staying power on the waterline. Some people swear it stays put longer, but others mention that it smudges & smears – especially if you have oily skin. I personally can attest to that. I have 3 of these pencils, and have never gotten them to stay put on my waterline for more than a few hours. Another complaint is that it’s a pencil, which does require sharpening. Some don’t like the inconvenience of it, and others say it’s tough to get a precise line with a pencil.

    Image description

I would agree, but these do have a fantastic color impact on lids. Usually, I’ll apply a black pen or liquid liner first to create a sharp wing, and fill in waterline – then top with a bit of color from the Wonderskin Pencil.

  • How to Prevent Dry Skin During Cold Winter Weather

Q: Why does oily skin become dehydrated & dry during winter seasonal changes?

Change of seasons can wreak havoc on the skin, no matter if it's dry, combination, or oily. How many times have you had an influx in breakouts during the shift from summer to fall, or from winter to spring? It’s a fairly common occurrence, but can be prevented by switching up a few steps in your skincare routine.
    Picture

A: Cold winter weather leaches humidity from the atmosphere, which is why skin tends to feel dry and tight while you’re outdoors. To create a comfortable temperature, most indoor buildings have central heating, which also removes moisture from the air. You may notice that no matter where you spend most of your time during winter, your skin always feels dry – even if it’s prone to being oily.

As winter approaches, these skin care tips can help your complexion stay in balance:
    Picture
#1 Rule: Be sure to moisturize, but use a product designed for your skin type.

Nothing sends skin into a frenzy worse than disruption in moisture levels. If skin is deprived of moisture, it recognizes its need for hydration, and begins pumping out even more oil than usual. This translates to clogged pores, breakouts, and generally confused skin. It often feels dry & tight, but looks extra shiny.

The majority of moisturizers on the market have a tendency to be overly emollient and thick. They rarely absorb fully into skin, leaving behind a sticky film that attracts environmental pollutants and prevents skin from feeling clean. What’s worse, they combine with foundation, forming a sticky mass that gets lodged inside of pores.  Hello breakouts!
Those with oily skin should always look for gel or serum moisturizers, which hydrate without  contributing to excess oil production. Mattify’s Incredi-Gel and Stop-Zit light weight moisturizers for oily skin and acne prone skin have been formulated especially for those who have had bad experiences with traditional moisturizing products. Their aloe gel base is saturated with essential oils and absorbs within seconds, sending the medicinal properties of these plant oils deep into pores, destroying acne bacteria and balancing oil production – without adding any shine to skin, or disrupting makeup application.
    Picture
    Picture
If oily skin has you dead-set against using any type moisturizer during the day, at least use a moisturizing mask 2x weekly, or apply a regular moisturizer overnight.

Try the RE:P Bio Fresh Herbal Mask by  Soko Glam. It contains all natural ingredients and provides a soothing dose of herbal moisture for irritated, acne prone skin. This way, you can hydrate, without having a layer of moisturizer on your skin all day.
    Rule #2: Spot Treat!

If you’re using chemical based acne treatments, spot-treat each breakout individually, rather than applying the product to your entire face. Why?  Most chemical acne products contain ingredients intended to dry out the breakout - so when they’re applied to your whole face, they can severely dehydrate skin, which leads to excess peeling and oil production.  During harsh weather, that's the last thing you need!
    Picture
It's best to prevent acne in the first place. During your morning and/or evening routine, apply Mattify’s The Exfoliator in slow circular motions, to remove dead skin cells that can trap debris inside of pores.  Once the scrub has been rinsed away, use a face wash to which you've added Mattify’s Essential Oil Treatment for Acne Prone, Oily Skin. The plant-based ingredients in this additive help to balance oil production, rather than stripping skin of moisture, as some harsh soaps can do when used alone.  The formula also deters acne bacteria, so you end up with fewer breakouts.
Following these simple steps can make all the difference between irritated breakout-prone winter skin, and fresh glowing skin!

EXTRA TIP: To amp up your glow another notch, apply Mattify’s Powder Highlighter onto cupid’s bow, tip of nose, upper cheekbones, and under brows!

  • Calling Out Some Over-Hyped Face Powder Products: NOT for Oily Skin!

Guest Post by Ashley Bergin of Hub Pages

In the world of makeup, there’s a list of hyped up vocabulary currently circulating that’ll cause cringe for any oily-skinned girl. Think hashtags such as: Luminous, Glowy, Reflective, Prism, Creamy, Radiant, and the atrocious “Dewy Dumpling”.  For those of us who fight tooth and nail to prevent shine, we can’t imagine purposely applying a full face of makeup that appears to amp up oil levels!

    Om...
    NO!
    Picture

Many popular products sprawled all over social media actually contain ingredients that can spell disaster for oily and/or acne prone skin. Let’s take a look at some…

    BAD #1
    Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrushed Finish Powder

The main ingredients are Talc, Mica and Dimethicone! These are 3 very unfriendly ingredients for oily, acne prone skin.

Talc and Dimethicone create a thick paste that clogs pores, the effects of which are intensified if the user has oily skin. Mica only adds shine to the skin, and should be reserved for eyeshadow and appropriately placed highlighters. In addition, this powder contains Rosa Multiflora Flower Wax. While we give them props for using a plant-derived ingredient, it’s still a rubbery wax that’s likely to clog pores.

    Charlotte Tilbury Airbrushed Finish Powder

When freshly applied, this powder looked nice and had even coverage, but it didn’t control shine for more than an hour. At a price point of $34, it seems like a whole lot to pay for burying your skin in less than stellar ingredients and not controlling shine.

    BAD #2
    La Mer’s “The Powder”

Nestled among some unpronounceable synthetics, along with a few high-quality natural ingredients, we find the same offenders: Dimethicone and Mica. Plus, I can’t really figure out why such a pricey brand would add synthetic colors like Red 7, Red 30 and Yellow 5.

    La Mer "The Powder"

I actually sampled some of this at Nordstrom’s, wanting to find if it would truly provide the flawless finish it promises.  Admittedly, it felt silky and gave me a poreless finish, but this was oh-so-temporary. I was wearing my usual water-based Dinair foundation, but skipped powder so I could see the genuine effect of La Mer’s brand. After I used the sample, I wandered around the store, browsing and trying on some shoes. Around 2 hours later, I checked my complexion in a dressing room mirror and was disappointed to see oily breakthrough and ACCENTUATED pores! I’ve used drugstore Cover Girl Powder that has a longer lasting finish than this bizarrely expensive product.

Thanks to Instagram, the “dewy dumpling” look (using La Mer’s Powder) is trending, which is horrifying to those with oily skin. There’s a fine line between spot-highlighting for a slight glow, and covering your entire complexion in a powder that coats you in shine, yet does nothing to control oil. All for $110 no less! Let’s leave this one for the dry skinned ladies.
We’re not just here to target overpriced powders...there are also drugstore brands and lower cost items that underperform.
    BAD #3
E.L.F. Halo Glow Setting Powder and Mineral Pearls

While I'm a fan of quite a few E.L.F. products, these two powders were some of the worst for I ever tried on my oily skin. Not only do they have zero oil-control, they add an unwanted sheen to the complexion. These are especially bad to use when you might be photographed, as they contain mica, which reflects light and adds shine.

    E.L.F. Halo Glow Setting Powder

These E.L.F. Mineral Pearls are popular among people who want to achieve a glowy all-over complexion without using a separate highlighter. Sadly though, this powder just makes skin look greasy and oddly colored. I'm not even convinced this would look good on dry skin - it's just too glossy. Perhaps if a small tapered brush were used to apply it only to upper cheek bones and maybe under brow bones, you might have success with this product.

    Bare Minerals Original

I practically have PTSD when I think of this brand.

About 10 years ago before I really started researching makeup ingredients, I got suckered in by one of those mall kiosks sales people.  They sold me the Mineral Veil Loose Setting Powder, and Orignal Foundation, after a lengthy tutorial on the back of my hand. The makeup seemed soft and silky, plus it gave a nice finish that didn’t feel heavy. I was heading to a party that night, and couldn’t wait to try my new makeup!

    Bare Minerals Original Powder Foundation

About 1 hour into the party, my face began to itch horribly. I scampered to a bathroom, and found that my face had turned orange like an Oompa Loompa! I called my salon-owning friend in, practically hyperventilating, and asked if she had any makeup I could use because I needed to wash my face ASAP. It was from her that I learned all about oxidation! She said that she swore off Bare Minerals because it will often merge with skin oils and actually change color – hence the giant orange stain on my face. In addition, she said I was probably allergic to the Bismuth Oxychloride in the product, and that caused the itching. She had 2 other friends who had the same reaction!

I don’t know how anybody with even slightly oily skin uses this powder. It’s a relatively popular brand, but with my excessively oily skin it did NOT work! I did end up being brave enough to use the transparent Mineral Veil again, after seeing that it didn’t contain the dreaded Bismuth ingredient. It was just “ok”, but didn’t control oil enough to justify the hefty price tag. As for the powder foundation – I’m not really sure what caused it to oxidize, as I have tried a couple of mineral powders from different brands, and they did not do this. I think it just didn’t have enough ingredients to control oil, so once it mixed with the oils from my skin, disaster ensued.
    BAD #5
Revlon Colorstay 16hr Powder for Oily Skin

Ok so I absolutely LOVED this face powder after trying for the first time. It goes on silky smooth and provides an amazingly flawless finish, plus provides added coverage. It appears to erase pores, gives an overall uniform look, and the illusion of perfect skin.  The bad part? It does not last for more than 2 hours on oily skin and refuses to control oil.

I kept it in my bag so I could test how it would function with touch-ups after my skin inevitably got oily. The result was not good. After I applied the second layer it felt heavy, and after about an hour, my skin was thick with makeup. I could see tiny cracks in the powder around my eyes and mouth. It looked like a beige film on my face – not natural or flattering at all. Then, I researched ingredients, and found out why…
Revlon Colorstay Powder Review Makeup for Oily Skin Blog Mattify Cosmetics

    Revlon Colorstay 16hr Powder

This powder contains both Talc and Polyethylene, which are notably thick, heavy ingredients that do not meld well with oily skin. Talc does absorb oil to some degree, but when it becomes overly saturated, will create a thick paste. Polyethylene is a synthetic ingredient that creates a film over skin, which potentially could prevent sebum from surfacing. However, this could cause breakouts, as skin is smothered by the product and oxygen is not able to circulate. In addition, severely oily skin will simply ignore this barrier, and sebum will surface regardless. For these reasons, Colorstay Powder is not good for touch-ups. When you continually layer a Polyethylene product over itself, it will become cakey and sticky as it mixes with skin oils.

On the up side, this powder does contain Kaolin and Corn Starch, which are highly absorbent to skin oils. However, these 2 promising ingredients do not make up for the lousy effects of Talc and Polyethylene. If you’re going to use this product, use it 1x only, after freshly applied foundation. Then, switch to a transparent matte powder for touchups.

Now, a few suggestions for powders that actually DO work on oily skin...

    Best Pick #1
Ok, so it’s no big surprise that I’m including the Mattify brand of powder for a post on their website – but the reason I became involved in guest posting for this brand is because I absolutely adore their products for my oily skin! This ULTRA Powder was the very first one I found that would control oil, and did not make me break out.

Every morning, I use this powder under and over my foundation, plus for touchups throughout the day. It doesn’t feel heavy or cakey. I love that it can be used as a primer and a setting powder, because my skin needs all the oil control it can get, without having a thick layer of color sitting on top of my makeup.

Mattify ULTRA Best Powder for Oily Skin

Unlike most colored setting powders I’ve used, I only need to retouch 1x per day when I’m at work. This seriously lasts 4 hours before re-powdering is necessary, and even though I’ve used it for the past 7 years, I’m still in awe every time I look in the mirror and don’t see a hideous gloss all over my face.

For anybody who is 100% against mica, silicone (dimethicone), talc, pearl powder, bismuth oxychloride, and artificial ingredients, this will be their holy grail. I’m incredibly acne prone, but this stuff is so gentle and light weight that I’ve barely suffered from any breakouts all the years I've used it.

    Best Pick #2
This is probably the lightest weight tinted pressed powder I’ve ever used, and I’ve tried 30+ from high-end to drugstore brands. For some reason, when tint is added, many pressed powders look heavy. Add that to any fluctuations in heat or humidity within your environment, and it can quickly start to feel like you’re wearing an actual mask.

Kosas’s Cloud Powder is aptly named, because it goes on soft and fluffy. It also comes in a variety of shades, from warm to cool undertones. Blending is a breeze, but I’ve found that it’s best to use this immediately after applying foundation, for a poreless look. If you are using it to retouch, be sure to use a blotting technique rather than long sweeping motions, to avoid streaking your makeup.

    Best Pick #3
This is one of the few tinted powder variations I've found that has super oil-control abilities. If you prefer tinted over transparent, this brand is an excellent choice. It feels light, and since it’s loose powder it has superb blendability, plus creates an airbrushed finish. The puff it comes with is firm - great for pressing the powder onto your T-Zone, without smudging foundation.

Best Loose Powder for Oily Skin Palladio Rice Powder Mattify Cosmetics Beauty Blog Makeup

Palladio Loose Powder for Oily Skin

The ingredients in this are minimal, they don't load it up with unnecessary fillers or chemicals. The rice starch is a great oil absorber, which helps foundation last longer and prevents streaking. It does contain talc, so if you have known sensitivities to that ingredient, you’ll want to avoid this one. I've found that I only have a bad reaction to talc if it's included with other pore clogging ingredients, like dimethicone (which Palladio's formula does not contain). If it's one of those days where I need light weight extra coverage over my foundation, this is my go-to choice.

    Oily Skin Hack

Dealing with oily skin and wanting to look glowy, not oily? Apply Mattify ULTRA Powder underneath foundation as your first line of defense against oil!

This oil-control blend provides a satiny, blurred finish while preventing foundation from being ruined by facial oil.

Best of all, it's talc-free, silicone-free, and does not contain mica; which means no fear of clogged pores.

    TO APPLY:
BEFORE applying foundation or eye shadow, use a fluffy powder brush to apply Mattify ULTRA over your entire face (including eye lids!) This powder is transparent, so it will not interfere with your other makeup products. It becomes invisible upon blending.

Proceed to apply foundation, eye shadow, blush, and highlighter as usual. The ULTRA Powder acts as an oil-control primer base, allowing all makeup to be longer lasting.
  • Best Wedding Makeup for Oily Skin

Best wedding makeup looks for oily skin, by Mattify Cosmetics ULTRA oil-control powder to keep face looking shine free all day.

Oil-Control Makeup Solutions, for Your Best Wedding Makeup Looks

Trends come and go, flying faster than you can scroll TikTok – but some classic makeup mainstays are here to stay, and with good reason.

When you’re looking to achieve a perfect wedding makeup look, it can be challenging if you have oily skin. Not only does a greasy complexion look reflective in photos, but it also ensures that your makeup will streak, fade and transfer. You can prevent this tragedy, by using a quality setting powder as your base, and finisher.

Why Should Mattify ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin be a Staple in Your Wedding Day Makeup Bag?

    #1

First off, Mattify ULTRA functions as both an oil-control primer AND a setting powder. This means you get double the oil control from 1 singular product. Not only will it help prevent makeup from streaking and smudging, it also protects pores from clogging due to heavy foundations and concealers.

PRO TIP: Avoid liquid primers if you have oily, acne prone skin. The common ingredients (especially dimethicone) are intended to create a smooth finish - but they end up trapping dirt, oil, and makeup deep inside pores. This inevitably leads to blackheads and acne in the following days. Don’t let your wedding makeup trigger mass breakouts for your honeymoon!

    #2

Second, ULTRA Powder blurs pores without smothering them, for a fresh natural matte finish. It adds no color or texture to your skin, as to not look heavy or thick, since it contains no Talc. Applied with a fluffy powder brush, it will give you the airbrushed finish of your dreams!

    #3

Third, ULTRA Powder is long lasting and does not become saturated by skin oils quickly. With specialized ingredients designed to absorb 3x its weight in oil, you will see a noticeable difference using this product VS common face powders that claim oil control. Very oily skin types report having to blot within ½ hour of using other transparent powders, but with ULTRA Powder can go nearly 2 hours before shine even begins to peek through.

    #4

Fourth, ULTRA Powder does not cause photo flash back! Long a nightmare of brides and bridesmaids, ULTRA Powder will not cause you to have an obnoxious blotchy-white complexion. The ingredients which cause flash-back are Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide.  They are often found in sunscreen, and have a thick white consistency. While ULTRA Powder does contain Titanium Oxide, it is only present at the dispersion of 3%, not nearly enough to cause flash-back. In addition, the formula is finely milled and sifted, resulting in a light weight face powder.
How to not get flashback in a photo with the correct makeup setting powder - Mattify Cosmetics ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin

PRO TIP: For added resistance to makeup-meltdown, especially if your wedding will be on a hot day, apply a makeup setting spray once all of your makeup is in place. Professional makeup artists never skip this step, especially for big events! We are a distributor of Ben Nye Final Seal, which is used by theater production companies whose clients spend all day under hot makeup-melting lights. It feels light weight, dries quickly, and helps makeup last for 8+ hours. An alternate makeup setting spray to try is Urban Decay Ultra Matte, which is also good for oily skin types.

So after all this, who should NOT use ULTRA Powder on their wedding day? Those with very dry, patchy, or flaky skin. You instead will want to look for hydrating cream foundations, and apply only a very light dusting of tinted powder, rather than transparent, for the most natural look. Makeup setting sprays for dry skin are out there as well! Try MILK Hydro Grip Spray or Urban Decay All Nighter Extra Glow.

    ADDED BONUS:
Even men in the wedding party can use ULTRA Powder if they are worried about shine in photos!  This powder goes on clear and is completely undetectable. It acts as invisible shine control for anybody with oily skin!

    The Secret of Targeted Shine.

Just because you want shine control for your wedding makeup look doesn’t mean it has to be boring!

Sometimes matte powder can look a bit flat, and for the best pictures, you want to add angular definition to your face with highlighter and contouring bronzer. This can include lifted cheekbones, a more slender nose, a shorter forehead, and a defined jaw line. Don’t forget to add some sparkle to the center of your eye lids, for a shimmering glow.

You can search online to find specific contouring tutorials based on your face shape, but this image below serves as a basic guide.

Some people with oily skin also suffer breakouts, often on the forehead or chin. If this is the case, NEVER place highlighter on top of a breakout! It will only accentuate the bump, calling attention to what you are trying to hide.

    PRO TIP:

To hide a blemish, strategically place a tiny dot of concealer (1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone) directly under the blemish. Pat until blended. This conceals the shadow created by the raised blemish, and in turn makes it look smaller.

*After your foundation is in place, never place concealer directly on top of an acne breakout, as it will only make it stand out.
